Comme les jours précédents, les géographies du transitoire 1996 (installation view). Black and white photographs, aluminium scaffolding, light source. Suzanne and Claire Paquet are sisters who live in Montreal. They collaborate in the production of photo-textual installations and bookworks: Claire writes the French-language texts and Suzanne contributes the photographic and sculptural elements. To prepare for this project, the artists photographed extensively in and around Pier 21 on the Halifax waterfront. By accentuating the Art Gallery's resemblance to a port shed, their installation prompted viewers to experience it as scene rather than place — a theatre for the creation of fictions. Images of obsolescent port installations fused with poetic narrative and the practice of travel photography to chart remembered territories, the "géographies tributaries du transitoire."
