Return to search results Sara Hartland-Rowe: Look to the LivingSara Hartland-Rowe, Stefanie with Cats 2010 The figures in Hartland-Rowe’s new canvases are portraits drawn from life and placed in imaginary situations. By contrast, in the collaged paintings on paper she depicts multiple, imaginary figures performing in circus-like spaces. Whether the ambience is haunting, as in the canvases, or dramatic, as in the paper paintings, her work tends to evoke the blundering, blinded relationship humans have to the world around us. In the works on canvas the artist replicates the luminosity of watercolour with thin washes of acrylic or oil in layers. Together with coloured hatching and loose mark-making, the emphatic contours of the figures harken back to her principle visual language—drawing. Hartland-Rowe’s new works combine the defining power of drawing with the spatial ambiguities of colour, with hallucinatory effect. OPENING RECEPTION Opens jointly with Soft on Saturday, 2 June, from 3 to 5pm. Sara Hartland-Rowe will give an artist’s tour of the exhibition during the opening.
