The Absence of Absence
by Kathy Mac
The Absence of Absence
is not presence. Death empties a place
that never fills again, no matter
how the surviving try to stuff it
with traces of their own ragged race
against mortality. And names invoked
are homage to mystery, not knowing;
life slips through those frail signs
like mercury, leaving what? A signature:
A.C. MacKenzie, who never went by Alice
was born Frenette, and answered to Sue
because Cécile anglicized sounds too
much like the man’s name, Cecil.
It seems she never had a life of her own
until life ceased. Now she has hundreds.
