Gary WilsonGary Wilson was born in New Brunswick and educated in his home province, Ontario and Nova Scotia. His 30-year photographic practice primarily involves Maritime landscape forms, land (ab)use and, more recently, documentary portraiture and landscape work in Ulster, Ireland, Wilson’s ancestral homeland. Inspired by his grandfather’s stories and diary, Wilson visited France and Belgium in 2003, and the six images in this exhibition are part of a suite of photographs captured on that trip. These pastoral scenes of the rolling hills near Vimy Ridge are not foreign to Maritime eyes and yet belie the unimaginable carnage of these most civilized European peoples—a carnage that literally oozes to the surface with each spring thaw, ninety years later. |
