Organized by the United States Information Service Romare Bearden's art affirms black cultural heritage and its place in North American culture. The African-American artist (1914–1988) grew up in Harlem, New York, during the Harlem Renaissance. Active in the civil rights movements of the 1960s, he began at this time to make the collages that brought him critical recognition.
