Mike MacDonald: Butterfly Garden
Mike MacDonald: Butterfly Garden

Mike MacDonald. Butterfly Garden 1997. Perennial border, MSVU campus.
24 May 1997 – 27 Jul 1997

Digital Garden was an installation composed of a video projection and laser-printed photographs depicting Eastern Canadian butterflies and the plant species on which they depend. Indigenous plants have been planted on campus to attract local species of butterfly. Each plant favoured by butterflies has a medicinal use.

Mike MacDonald is of Mi’kmaq ancestry. Digital Garden coincided with the quincentennial of John Cabot’s arrival in Newfoundland. Given this historical context, Digital Garden may be understood as an ecological metaphor for decolonization and healing.

The butterfly garden planted near the MSVU Art Gallery vestibule contains the following plants:
Chives
Shasta Daisy
Chamomile
Feverfew
Oregano
Mallow ST. John’s Wort
Thread Leaf Coreposis
Coreopsis Grandiflora
Mt. Atlas Daisy
Early Coreposis
Brown-Eyed Susan
Liatris
Kinnikinnik
Monarda
Jacob’s Ladder Blue
Jacob’s Ladder White
Canada Anemone
Violet
