Snapshots in Contemporary Canadian Art

Curreri: Untitled from The Bicycle Race
Curreri: Untitled from The Bicycle Race

Chris Curreri. Untitled detail from the series The Bicycle Race 2002. Giclee print with thread, approx. 40 x 50 in.
10 Apr 2004 – 5 Jun 2004

A genre of artmaking has arisen that hinges on the integration of the snapshot, whether found or selected from the artist’s personal archive, into complex works of art. As the curators suggest, this set of practices intervenes at the moment when “digital technologies are changing the ways in which we make, look at and keep our snapshots. In the midst of a technological revolution, this exhibition acknowledges the power of the snapshot as well as its materiality, and marks a shift in our relationship to this most personal of objects.”
