Return to search results Ruth Cuthand: Back Talk (works 1983-2009)Ruth Cuthand, Small Pox 2009 beads and acrylic on suedeboard 61.0 x 45.7cm photo courtesy of the artist The exhibition includes more than 30 drawings, paintings, beadworks and video by Saskatchewan Cree artist Ruth Cuthand. The superimposition of text on image is a hallmark of her work, in which rudimentary stenciling parodies notions of ‘Indians’ as unlearned and speaks simply to white audiences who just can’t seem to ‘get it.’ Combining political invective, humour and deliberate stylistic crudeness, Cuthand exposes the inequities that have plagued for centuries Canada’s relationship with its First Peoples, while proudly claiming her complex and self-determined aboriginal identity. This project has been made possible in part through a contribution from the Saskatchewan Arts Board Culture on the Go program and a grant from the Museums Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage. ARTIST’S TALK AND RECEPTION Ruth Cuthand discusses her work on Sunday, 12 February, from 2 to 4pm. *A free chartered bus will leave the parking lot of the Sobey’s on Windsor and North at 1:15pm, and will depart MSVU Art Gallery at 4:15pm. * Exhibition Images Click on an image to enlarge it. |
