Return to search results Body TracksPhilomène Longpré, Xia 2011, Interactive video performance (photo credit Bruce Barbour) Body Tracks foregrounds the life and art of Ana Mendieta (1948-1985), who despite being a prolific performance and body artist from the 1970s is unknown to many artists under forty. Her career serves as an illustration of feminist art practices of the 1970s and the backlash against that movement in the mid 1980s. The exhibition presents a collection of works that show a female performing. Curator Christine Redfern seeks to examine issues first raised in the 1970s by artists like Mendieta and continue to be raised by contemporary artists. It includes a 1976 video projection, Anima by Ana Mendieta, an interactive video-performance by Philomène Longpré, Xia, and the original drawings from the graphic novel Who is Ana Mendieta? written by Christine Redfern and illustrated by Caro Caron. With the brutal nature of Mendieta’s history presented alongside the disquieting imagery of Longpré’s performance, the exhibition acts as a catalyst for discussions about violence against women. Financial Support from the Canada Council for the Arts is gratefuly acknowledged. Thanks to the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for additional funding for Philomène Longpré.
