Prospect 6: Painting by Sarra McNie

Sarra McNie: Iron Tulip
Sarra McNie: Iron Tulip

Sarra McNie. Iron Tulip 1998. Oil on canvas. 77 x 59 cm.
23 May 1998 – 2 Aug 1998

The "Prospect" exhibition series gives critical consideration to the work of Nova Scotia artists at the beginning of their careers.

Like her predecessors in the series, Sarra McNie has constructed a version of herself — a persona — which then inhabits her work as subject matter. As a painter, she functions within an age-old tradition that has generally subordinated the achievements of female artists. Her choice of the female nude (her own figure) as subject introduces further problems. McNie’s negotiation of this gender politics is at the core of the exhibition thesis. The exhibition is composed of paintings in closely valued tints.
