Letters from the Edge: Zapatista Embroideries
(Window Box)

Women of Chiapas: Embroideries
Women of Chiapas: Embroideries

Women of Chiapas, Mexico. Various embroideries in coloured yarns on cotton, 1995-1996.
16 Oct 1997 – 14 Dec 1997

Sited in the Library vitrines as part of the Window Box series, this selection of cloths embroidered by Maya women from Chiapas, Mexico, provoked strong viewer response. The exhibition presented the women's production as a branch of the Zapatista global communications strategy, crossing indigenous craft with Catholic votive iconography and Marxist sloganeering.
