Crayola Blizzard Blue Newly Retired 2004
wax crayon on paper
28.2 x 21.6 cm
Purchased as a part of Paperwork30, 2004
Mount Saint Vincent University Collection
2004.7.11

For his contribution to Paperwork30, Garry Neill Kennedy used a “retired” Crayola crayon to write “Crayola (colour name) Newly Retired” on 25 sheets of hand-torn Rives BFK paper with each retired colour. On the reverse of the work, he included information about the retirement of the crayons.

“In 1990 Crayola® retired eight of its world-renowned colours: Green-Blue, Orange-Yellow, Orange-Red, Violet-Blue, Maize, Lemon-Yellow, Blue-Grey, and Raw Umber. Since then these colour have not been available to consumers...until now! In this limited edition, we have reunited these eight classic colours — plus four newly retired Crayola® crayon colours. Perfect for collectors and Crayola® fans alike.”

This work, though small, makes reference to Kennedy’s larger wall works in its emphasis on colours and their cultural meaning.

NEW! is from Kennedy’s 2006 Two New Wars exhibition at Emerson Gallery, Berlin, which included two wall paintings based on the colours of one American and one British medal for the current Iraq war. Hung high on the painted wall, NEW! is a three-dimensional, oval marker that mimics the emphatic assertion stamped across advertisements — specifically one found in a “Medals of America” catalogue in which Kennedy researched his colours. NEW! speaks to consumer culture, through catalogue order, infomercials and advertisements. By asserting the “newness” of this incarnation of the war in Iraq, Kennedy makes a poignant historical reference to the “old”, the First Gulf War.

Garry Neill Kennedy studied at the Ontario College of Art, University at Buffalo, and the University of Ohio. In 1967 he was appointed President of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, a position which he maintained for 23 years. He is a distinguished artist who has produced an internationally recognized body of conceptual painting.
