In her curatorial essay for Source: An Installation of Paintings (2003), Caroline Stone wrote, “Koch distills visual motifs from her experiences of the land that become a stylized shorthand, the source material for her formal studio practice.” Koch’s study of trilobites is an exploration of variances in colour and shape. Displaying the fossil images in a grid-like pattern allows the viewer to see the differences between the species. As well, her use of gouache, a vibrant medium, reinforces this exploration.

Of her work, the artist states, “Because I work in serial imagery, a process of theme-and-variation, the genus Trilobita, with over 15,000 recognized species, offers a rich and irresistible vein to mine. Interpretation of the fossil record of necessity involves some degree of speculation, fantasy, and, in my case, liberal use of artistic license (who knows what colour trilobites were?) As I am an artist, not a scientist, I am not overly concerned with anatomical exactitude or accuracy of scale. Instead, I employ the trilobite image as a vehicle to indulge my love of colour and visual play.” (artist’s statement, 2004)

Koch received a BA in English Literature and a BFA in Art and Design (University of Alberta, 1981 and 86 respectively) and an MA in English Literature (University of Toronto, 1982). She has exhibited across the country in several solo and group shows. Two solo exhibitions, The River God Suite (1990-93) and Outside and Inside (1994-96) toured nationally. Her paintings and original prints are in major Canadian public and corporate collections and in private collections worldwide.
