These drawings carry with them the history of Lucie Chan’s installation Something to Carry, her first solo exhibition — one of MSVU Art Gallery’s Prospect Series exhibitions.

The installation consisted of five booth-like structures, three of which were designed to be entered. Each paper enclosure was suspended from the ceiling. The walls of structures were formed by hundreds of drawings, each done in ink on letter-sized bond paper, double-layered to have images face outward and inward. Some of drawings were cut out and joined together to form lace-like veils. The images developed themes of connection; one figure carrying another, one connected to another through clothing, one searching through various kinds of containers, one giving these containers to another, and people embracing and healing one another. The drawings were reproduced in five books, and viewers were invited to respond in writing to an image with which they felt connected. Following the installation, Lucie Chan gave the small drawings to those viewers. She then donated these eight works to the MSVU Art Gallery.

Something to Carry addressed the idea of passing personal histories and stories along as a form of letting go and forgiving. For Chan, the installation dealt with “issues of searching for connections through others or being connected to them not by choice or not with burden, but by circumstance.” She describes her process as "remembering and forgetting," and compares the effect of her installations to "entering someone else’s dream state.”

Chan received her BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design, and her MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where she now teaches.
