Ron Shuebrook completed these large, black and white paintings in 1976, while he was living in Canning, Nova Scotia, and teaching art history at Acadia University. Although his work builds on the formalist principles of American Late Modernism, Shuebrook is often inspired by specific places and events. The two Untitled works were influenced by local landscape elements such as the waterfalls on the Cape Blomidon cliffs and melting ice. Both paintings are left unstretched to integrate the shape of the supports with the fluid shapes in the compositions. Shuebrook’s paintings and drawings are as much about materials and process as they are about the organization of a two-dimensional surface.

The Untitled paintings were previously exhibited at MSVU Art Gallery in a 1977 solo show and are included in the 2014 permanent exhibition Big in Nova Scotia. These works were acquired on the occasion of the Gallery’s presentation of the touring exhibition Ron Shuebrook: Drawings. Two more paintings from the same series are held in The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s Permanent Collection.
