Since her artistic beginnings in 1950s Chicago, June Leafs imagery has centred on the figure. Her drawings and painting possess an animated quality that is actualized in the sculptures, some of which are articulated or mechanized. Leaf moved to Mabou, Cape Breton, with the photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank in 1970. In her essay, Halkes discusses erotic themes in the 1999-2000 drawings, small paintings and sculpture.
