In/Visible Truths
The Photographic Work of Clara Gutsche, Adrian Piper and Allyson Clay

Allyson Clay also makes herself the subject of her work and similarly employs aspects of performance in her photographs. Her image and text installation, Untitled I (My Sense of Place), II (Previously Swallowed Objects) & III (Self-portrait) (1995-98), critiques modern painting’s representation of women. Presented in large light boxes, the three self-portraits are like staged promotional stills, from a long narrative history in the process of a re-write. Narrative fragments are applied to the walls in italicized script, and small gold oval frames hold text, details of Romantic figurative sculpture, and a hand with a superimposed sharp object. The installation needs to be read as a whole to “make sense” of Clay’s examination.
